Oxford: Academia, Harry Potter and Inspector Morse Print E-mail

Did you know that some scenes from the “Harry Potter” movies were filmed in Oxford, England? No, neither did we. Apparently one of the colleges doubled as Hogwart's School – and you can find out more about this and other interesting facts on a “Pottering In Harry's Footsteps Tour” from the Oxford Tourist Office.

OxfordBut if Harry Potter isn''t your bag there is plenty more to enjoy in this fabled city of “dreamy spires”. You can enjoy a romantic boat trip along the River Thames, punt along the River Cherwell or take a tour on an open-top bus and see all the sights of this magnificent university city.

And if you are a fan of the author Colin Dexter why not try and hunt down the haunts of the late Inspector Morse or his still-current sidekick Lewis? Yes, they were both filmed in Oxford as well.

Morse loved a good puzzle and you'll probably feel inspired (excuse then pun!) as you stroll around the Bodleian Library, the Ashmolean Museum, the Botanic Gardens and Christ Church Cathedral

The Ashmolean Museum has a massive collection of art and archaeology, from ancient Egypt to the 20th Century, plus paintings, sculpture, ceramics, silver, glass, coins and art from the Far East.

And you don't have to go Venice to see the “Bridge of Sighs” - New College Lane is the location of Oxford's own version, built in 1913/14. The Venetian bridge links two sides of Hertford College.

The Oxford Tourism web site list more than 150 attractions, so it is easy to see how you could spend a long weekend in the area. And if you fancy a trip out of town how about Blenheim Palace or the Cotswold Wildlife Park?
