There is no fun in going on an overseas holiday if it means setting off for the airport at 2am. And with airlines asking you to check in three hours before departure things are not getting any easier. Luckily there is a solution - travel down the night before and stay in a hotel.

With a package deal of a hotel for one night AND parking at the hotel your trip becomes more relaxed and you get some much-needed sleep before your trip.

However, as BBC's "Watchdog" consumer programme has shown you need to pick your car parking company carefully.  Some have been shown to take your car, park it on an industrial estate for a week and then bring it back the day before you return. Great!

Wherever possible, make sure that the parking you pick is on site. For example, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza near Heathrow on our last family holiday. The hotel was great and our car stayed exactly where we left it, all week. 

The overall price wasn't a lot different to if we had just paid for the parking on its own and we had complete peace of mind.
